Siding Installation Made Simple: Value, Style & Protection

Let’s skip the brochure-speak. You’re here because you want your house to look better, last longer, and maybe (just maybe) get your neighbor to ask, “Who did your siding?” At Petra Exteriors, we’re not here to pitch. We’re here to walk you through what really matters when it comes to siding, like you’re sitting on a front porch swing with a neighbor who’s been through a storm or two.

Petra Exteriors is a licensed Tennessee contractor (License #80976) with $1M/$2M general liability insurance. The owner, Nathan Liechty, has overseen residential siding installations across Middle Tennessee for more than 34 years, and holds active James Hardie Alliance Program certification — a designation that requires demonstrated installation competency. Petra is accredited by the Better Business Bureau with an A+ rating.

What We’re Actually Talking About When We Say “Siding Installation”

This isn’t about slapping up some plastic panels and calling it a day. True siding installation is part armor, part art. It shields your home from storms, keeps your energy bills from ballooning, and yes, makes your place easier on the eyes. Whether you’re drawn to good ol’ vinyl, tough-as-nails fiber cement, or something in between, the install makes or breaks it. Trust me.

So, What’s It Gonna Cost Me?

Alright, the question everyone asks but hates the answer to: “It depends.” But we’re not dodging. We’ll give it to you straight. Full-home vinyl siding jobs? Based on typical Middle Tennessee installs, projects typically land around $13,380. Could be as low as $5,590 if you’re keeping things basic, or spike to $21,160 if your house has more twists and turns than a country road. Here’s how that shakes out:

• Basic lap vinyl: About $400 per square (that’s 100 sq ft)
• Fancy shake styles: Around $645 per square
Insulated vinyl (aka energy-saver siding): Closer to $825 per square

If you’re weighing vinyl against a more durable option, our fiber cement siding page breaks down cost, lifespan, and ROI side by side. And if you’re comparing contractors before committing, see what separates quality siding companies from the rest.

But don’t stop there. Think about:

• Rooflines that zigzag
• Tearing off old siding and hauling it away
Permits, seasonal labor rushes, and weird-shaped walls

All of that goes into your final number.

Should You DIY or Call in the Pros?

Let’s say you’re pretty handy. Single-story home. You’ve done trim, maybe a deck, and you’re up for a challenge. In that case, small spots or sheds? Sure. Just know the material will run you $100 to $150 per square, and your Saturday might turn into six of them.

When to Step Back and Let Us Handle It

Most full-house installs? You want pros. Why? Because if you don’t leave room for expansion, if your panels aren’t level, or if you nail them in too tight—well, you’ll be staring at warped walls every time the sun hits. We’ve seen it. It’s not pretty. Pros not only know the code, they know the rhythm of the job. That means faster installs, cleaner finishes, and no guessing.

The Stuff That Separates a Great Install from a Botched One

We start with a clean slate. That means peeling off the old layers, checking what’s underneath, and making sure the bones are sound. Then we wrap it up tight with a weather barrier.

Laying the Groundwork

Starter strips have to be dead-level. Not “eyeballed.” Actually level. If that first row’s off, the whole job drifts. Then we slot in trim pieces—J-channels, corner posts, all those little things that make the big picture click.

Panel by Panel

Vinyl needs room to move. It expands when it gets hot, contracts when it’s cold. So we float it, nailing it loose in the center of the slots. And we watch the overlaps. Every seam’s a detail, and every detail adds up. For projects where vinyl isn’t the right fit, we install James Hardie fiber cement using the same precision approach — manufacturer specs, no shortcuts.

Finishing Touches

Once the panels are in, we hang soffits, tuck in fascia, seal what needs sealing, and walk the whole house like it’s our own. No tools left behind. No scraps blowing through the yard. Every installation is managed by Nathan Liechty, owner of Petra Exteriors, who walks each job site before work begins and oversees quality from the first strip to the final soffit. You’re not handing your house to a crew you’ve never met, you’re working with the person whose name is on the company.

Customer Case Study: The Illinois Project – A historic home exterior remodel in The Nations neighborhood in Northwest Nashville.

This project was for a client who came to us through a referral from another trusted builder. The home, originally built in the 1800s, was in need of modern upgrade to the exterior look and the insulation, specifically in the exterior walls. We began by carefully removing the original wood siding. We installed James Hardie lap siding, selected carefully to match the original reveal and maintain the historic character of the home. So that we could meet the Hardie warranty requirements, we also installed ½” plywood sheathing and house wrap after completing the wall insulation.

The project was finished out with a great paint job by our in-house painting crew. Our customer chose a great color palette that really brought the home to life. We were able to preserve the original wood siding on the front of the home, as it had been well-protected under the porch roof and still remained in excellent condition.

We wanted to insulate this area without disturbing the siding, so the insulation was blown into the walls from the attic, allowing the client to retain the charm of the original material while improving energy efficiency throughout the home. This project was an excellent blend of preservation and performance, properly honoring the home’s history while upgrading it for visual appeal, comfort and durability.

Project Customer Review
“We hired Petra to re-side and paint our 100 year old house in The Nations. They did a great job, finishing on-time and at a reasonable price. Nathan was very easy to work with. They put insulation into the walls after removing the old siding and before putting up the new sheathing. On the front side they refurbished the original 100 year old lap siding and made it look new again. Both the siding crew and paint crew were friendly, courteous, professional and fast. The work was done with great care. I would not hesitate to recommend Petra if you need exterior work done on your house.”

How Long Will It Last? (And Why That Depends on Us)

Vinyl siding is like a pickup truck, it’ll run forever if you take care of it, but ignore it and it’ll rattle itself apart. Done right, we’ve seen siding hold up 25 to 40 years easy. Done wrong? You’re calling us in 10. If your siding is already showing damage rather than just age, the repair-vs-replace decision is a separate conversation — our siding repair guide walks through exactly when repair makes sense and when replacement is the smarter call.
Factors that make or break it:
• Good starter strips
• Correct nail spacing
• Quality materials that hold their color under Tennessee sun
• Regular rinses and seasonal check-ins

Let’s Talk Safety and Energy, Too

Vinyl’s hard to ignite. That’s the good news. But in tight suburban lots, if one house goes up, the next can follow quick. Our trick? Keep spacing code-tight, recommend insulated panels when it makes sense, and always reinforce fire-safe installs near garages or grills.

Save That Energy Bill

Insulated vinyl panels can bump up your R-value to 7.5 when paired with the right sheathing. That means your HVAC system isn’t sweating as hard, and you get quieter, cozier winters. Also? More durable. Less wavy.

Sustainability: It’s a Mixed Bag

Vinyl’s not compostable, no. But newer options come with recycled content, and we’ve got recycling partners who make sure leftovers don’t hit the landfill. Add in the energy savings, and your net impact gets better.

Choosing a Contractor: Your Five-Point Gut Check

Look for a siding installer who can answer these:

Q. Got insurance? (They better.)
Q. Can I see your recent work?
Q. Is your quote broken down or just one big mystery number?
Q. Who handles the permits?
Q. What if I have a problem six months later—will you still pick up the phone?

Petra Exteriors hits all five, every time. We even toss in drone footage, color boards, and a sweet tea if you’re thirsty.

Why Nashville Homes Deserve More Than Cookie-Cutter Siding

Here in Middle Tennessee, we average 7.8 severe storms per year. That’s not just trivia, it’s a reason to upgrade. And Hardie siding? That’s the MVP around here, replacing your home with fiber cement siding represents an average of over 110% return on the cost of your siding project. Still, vinyl’s holding strong for families who want durable, attractive, and budget-friendly protection.

At Petra, we tailor the job. Our siding installation will match your HOA’s color palette. Work around the school pickup schedule. We’re your neighbors, after all.

Look, you don’t need a pitch. You need a plan. And maybe a partner who’ll tell you the truth about whether that wall needs repair or just a rinse.

So, if your siding’s sagging, fading, or giving you that “we-should’ve-done-this-last-year” feeling—reach out. Let’s walk the house together and talk options.

Siding Installation FAQs

How much does siding installation cost in Nashville?

Most full-home vinyl siding jobs in Middle Tennessee run between $5,590 and $21,160, with an average around $13,380. Fiber cement and insulated vinyl cost more per square but deliver higher ROI and longer lifespan. The final number depends on home size, story count, profile complexity, and whether old siding needs to be removed first.

Should I DIY siding installation or hire a professional?

Small repairs on a single-story home are manageable for an experienced DIYer. Full-house installation is a different job entirely. Improper nail spacing, panels nailed too tight, or a starter strip that is even slightly off-level can cause warping, moisture infiltration, and voided warranties. Professionals also know local permit requirements and follow manufacturer specs that keep warranties intact.

How long does siding installation take?

A typical full-house siding replacement in Middle Tennessee takes three to seven days depending on home size, profile complexity, and whether substrate repairs are needed before new siding goes on. Weather and permit timing can affect the schedule.

How long will new siding last?

Vinyl siding installed correctly lasts 25 to 40 years. James Hardie fiber cement is rated for 30 to 50 years. Longevity depends heavily on installation quality — correct nail spacing, proper expansion gaps, and good starter strips are the difference between siding that holds for decades and siding that fails early.

Do I need a permit for siding installation in Nashville?

In most cases, yes. Metro Nashville requires permits for full siding replacement projects. Petra Exteriors handles permit coordination as part of every installation, so homeowners do not have to navigate that process on their own.
